What is an NIE number?
A Spanish Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE Number) is a Spanish tax identification number that the Spanish authorities assign to any foreigner. They are issued by the National Police of Spain who also issue Spanish passports and ID cards.
Why do I need one?
An NIE number is much like UK National Insurance Number and is needed when dealing with any financial transaction in Spain, particularly when paying taxes.
Under Spanish law, you will need a NIE number to:
- Open a bank account
- Buy or sell a property
- Arrange a loan or a mortgage
- Pay tax
- Be employed
- Receive payments for unemployment or social services
- To register with social services
- Start a business
- To apply for a driver’s licence
- To inherit assets
Our Spanish experts can arrange NIE numbers for you quickly and efficiently.
