How do I get a Spanish NIE Number in the UK? Do I need to travel to Spain?

NIE numbers are issued by the Spanish National Police. Once issued, it needs to be registered at the Spanish Tax Authority.

If you are a British National, you can choose to either apply locally in Spain, or via the Spanish Consulate in the UK. Applying locally will involve going to Spain and making two trips to the police station (the first trip to initiate the application, the second to collect the number, usually between two to three weeks apart). These trips may involve significant waiting time.

Alternatively, if you are considering how to get a Spanish NIE number in the UK, applying via the Consular route can avoid the inconvenience of travelling to Spain. However, it can be a challenging process, as there is little support with filling in the forms, it can be unreliable and takes at least four weeks to complete.
