I am the first person in my family to become a lawyer. My motivation is now almost lost in the mists of time, but had at least something to do with listening to radio programmes when growing up that dealt with listeners’ legal queries, making me realise at a young age that the law impacts at some level on every aspect of our lives, big or small. It seemed to me then (and it still does now) that it offered a rare combination of intellectual stimulation, human interest and the ability to make a difference.
I am now a dispute resolution solicitor with almost 20 years’ experience. My career started at leading city firms where I gained particular experience of disputes involving banks. In recent years, I have developed a more general practice encompassing a wide range of disputes on behalf of individuals and businesses. Recent reported cases include:
Holyoake & Anor v Candy & Ors [2017] EWHC 3397 (Ch), a high profile and hard fought £137m dispute, culminating in a 7 week trial, concerned the circumstances surrounding a loan between high net worth individuals. The case made law in relation to so-called “notification” injunctions and a decision of Nugee J. during the course of the action is a leading authority on the question of the collateral waiver of privilege.
Re BC&G Care Homes [2015] EWHC 1518 (Ch), a dispute between shareholders, concerning the application of s.994 of the Companies Act 2006.
I also have experience of cases involving challenges to the jurisdiction of the English Court, the enforcement of judgments and aspects of insolvency law.
Part of my career was spent “on the other side of the fence”, working for a bank in which I was the client instructing solicitors. I therefore understand how important communication between solicitor and client is on all aspects of a matter, including costs. I understand how stressful and time-consuming the litigation process can become which is one reason why I will explore all ways of bringing about an early and cost-effective solution to a dispute, whether by mediation or negotiation.
I have lived in St Albans for over 20 years. During that time, I have been privileged to have been involved with the St Albans’ Good Neighbour Scheme, the St Stephens Church lunch club and most recently, as the Chair of St Albans Sea Cadets. When not occupied with work or family, I enjoy walking in the Hertfordshire countryside and further afield when time allows.
